A Step-By-Step Guide for the Amateur Carpenter
Step 1: Planning To Build The Bookshelf
There are three parts to Step 1. First, decide what your needs are and then draw a sketch to meet the needs. Second, decide what materials you will need. Third, inventory your equipment to make sure you have the necessary tools
A. Plans:
Decide what you want and need from the bookshelf. Then draw a sketch of your plans. For example, I decided that I wanted a bookshelf that would also encase my computer, printers, ink, disks, and scanner. Therefore, I drew the following sketch.
B. Materials:
This bookshelf, to be made of white pine, will stand 6’ tall and 3’ wide.
1. The top 3 bookshelves will measure 1' deep and 3’ wide.
2. The bottom 3 computer shelves will measure 2' deep and 3’ wide.
3. Therefore, for the two 6' sides and the three top 3' shelves, I will need 24’ of 1” x 12”.
4. For the bottom 3 computer shelves, I will need 9’ of 1” x 24”.
5. For the base and shelf supports, I will need 16’ of 2” x 3” white.
6. In addition, I will need a container of #8 1 ½ wood screws, and a bottle of wood glue.
C. Equipment:
After your sketch is complete and you have decided what materials you will need, make sure you have the correct equipment and tools. For my bookshelf, I needed and had the following:
1. Tape measure
2. Wood screws
3. Safety goggles
4. Electric drill
5. Level
6. Electric sander
7. Wood glue
8. Phillips screwdriver
9. Table saw
